Box Score 2 BIG RAPIDS, Mich. -- Senior Madison Whitehead (Altoona, Wisc.) smashed her 1000th career kill as she helped the Northern Michigan University volleyball team capture two wins on the first day of action in 2017.
The team's first match of the Ferris State Invitational went the distance, as they defeated Northwest Missouri State University 25-15, 21-25, 25-23, 23-25, 15-7 for a thrilling 3-2 victory. The Wildcats followed it with a 3-1 victory over Quincy University, winning the match 20-25, 25-19, 25-22, 25-19.
Senior Kayla Chosa (Wrightstown, Wisc.) and freshman Leticia Antunes (Florianopolis, Brazil/Colegio Ofelia Fonseca) led the team's attack with 26 total kills. Freshman Sarah Kuehn (Green Bay, Wisc./De Pere) added 23 while Whitehead chipped in with 20.
Senior Jami Hogeboom (Grand Haven, Mich.) led the Wildcats with 91 assists. Over the two matches, NMU collected 13 total aces, paced by junior Autumn Monsma's (Grand Haven, Mich.) five.
Defensively, junior Rachel Braunschweig, (Alamo, Calif./San Ramon Valley/Cape Fear CC) posted a team-best 41 digs. Monsma aided the defense with 26 digs while Antunes (24 digs) and Hogeboom (22) also helped out. Protecting the net, Kuehn finished with 13 total blocks with Chosa adding 11. Whitehead also chipped in, recording nine.
Northern Michigan, 2-0 on the season, returns to action Saturday for Day Two of the Ferris State Invitational. The squad opens the day against Upper Iowa University at 12 p.m. and closes out the weekend with Missouri Western State University at 4 p.m.
