Wildcat Men's Basketball Drops Northwood, 79-62

Box Score

MIDLAND, Mich. — The Northern Michigan men's basketball team dropped Northwood, 79-62, Saturday afternoon at Riepma Arena.

The Wildcats, who led by as many as 30 points, sank 13 shots from beyond the three-point arc en route to their victory, which snapped a four-game losing skid.

With 10:53 to go in the first half, Northern Michigan held a slim 13-11 lead. The Wildcats then went on an 11-2 run, fueled in part by three three-point shots, to take a 24-13 advantage at the 7:39 mark.

A Marcus Matelski three-point shot gave Northern Michigan a 10-point, 27-17, lead with 6:53 left to play. The Wildcats ultimately scored eight of the half's final nine points to take a 41-26 edge into the locker room.

Northern Michigan carried the momentum from that run into the second half, scoring the first nine points to extend its lead to 50-26 by the 18:45 mark. By the 12:49 mark, the Wildcats found themselves up by 30, at 62-32.

While the Timberwolves would begin to chip away at their deficit, they would never narrow the gap into the single digits.

Isaiah Johnson paced the Northern Michigan onslaught with 22 points. Naba Echols finished second with 16 points and went a perfect 4-for-4 on his three-point shots. He also dished out a game-best six assists.

Jordan Perez (14) and Sam Taylor (11) scored in the double digits for the Wildcats as well. Five players finished with at least five rebounds.

Northern Michigan shot 54.2 (13-of-24) from beyond the three-point arc. It was the Wildcats' second-best percentage of the season; they shot 54.5 (12-of-22) percent during their 100-79 win over Northwood at the Berry Events Center on Jan. 21.

Northern Michigan also shot 50 percent from the floor and 50 percent from the charity stripe.

The Wildcats, now 7-14 (5-11 GLIAC), next take on Saginaw Valley State and Wayne State in their final home games of the 2016-17 campaign. Free tickets can be picked up at Jill Leonard State Farm (for Feb. 9's game) and Art Van Furniture (for Feb. 11's game).
