NMU Collects 3-2 Victory over Ashland As Four Players Reach 12 Kills

MARQUETTE, Mich.  --  Northern Michigan University's volleyball team featured four players who achieved 12 kills as the Wildcats proved too much for Ashland University with a 3-2 victory in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference matchup. 

NMU dropped the first set 25-21 but rebounded with a 25-23 victory in the second set.  The Wildcats then overpowered the Eagles with a 25-7 victory in the third set.  Ashland responded in the fourth set to win 25-23 and force a fifth set. 

In the deciding set, Northern Michigan led 8-5 as the teams switched ends, and finished off the Eagles by winning 15-10, claiming the 3-2 match victory.  The win was the second five-set match in a row for the Wildcats as they took Tiffin University to five sets Friday night.  

NMU was led by freshman Leticia Antunes (Florianopolis, Brazil/Colegio Ofelia Fonseca), who finished with 12 kills and 18 digs, her second straight double-double. 

Redshirt sophomore Sarah Kuehn (Green Bay, Wisc./De Pere) also achieved 12 kills and added nine total blocks, eight assisted and one solo block. 

Senior Madison Whitehead (Altoona, Wisc.) posted 12 kills and seven block assists while junior Autumn Monsma (Grand Haven, Mich.) also finished with 12 kills.

Senior Jami Hogeboom (Grand Haven, Mich.) chipped into the effort with 51 assists. 

In the defensive backline, junior Rachel Braunschweig (Alamo, Calif./San Ramon Valley/Cape Fear CC) notched a team-high 22 digs and also led the team with three aces.  Sophomore Gabriela Martinez (Vega Baja, Puerto Rico/Colegio Marista/Puerto Rico, Río Piedras) aided the defense with 13 digs. 

Senior Kayla Chosa (Wrightstown, Wisc.) continues to inch closer to 100 career solo blocks, posting three solo blocks and three assisted blocks.  She now has 99 solo blocks in her career.  On the offensive end, Chosa added nine kills.

As a team, NMU finished the match with a 59-37 advantage on kills and also totaled 16 blocks.

With the victory, the Wildcats improved to 12-5 on the season and 6-3 in GLIAC play.  Ashland fell to 10-7 and 4-5 in the league.  NMU will know travel to Aurora, Ill. to take part in the Midwest Region Volleyball Crossover next Friday and Saturday.
