Box Score MARQUETTE, Mich.—Northern Michigan University Women's Soccer (3-9-3, 2-4-2 GLIAC) held off a late push from Ferris State University (9-7, 5-3 GLIAC) to secure a 2-1 victory Friday afternoon in the final full weekend of Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play.
Both teams were looking to score early with five combined shots through the opening 15 minutes of action. The Wildcats took two shots during the span, while the Bulldogs recorded three. The difference was NMU putting both of their shots on-goal, finding the back of the net with the second.
Junior defender Sophia Sachs (Green Bay, Wisconsin) put a head on a corner kick taken by junior midfielder Maddie Herbert (Clarkston, Michigan) sending it into the back of the net in the 16th-minute. The goal was the first of the season for Sachs, while Herbert picked up her second assist of the season tying the team lead.
NMU finished the first half outshooting FSU with six chances at the net, putting four on target. In the 34th-minute, the Wildcats went up a pair on a free kick from senior defender Allyssa Milam (Williamston, Michigan). Milam's free kick from outside the box went between the legs of the keeper to score her second goal of the season.
Ferris St. picked up the offensive tempo in the second half to finish the contest with a 14-10 shot advantage. Freshman goalkeeper Brianna Frontuto (Luxemburg, Wisconsin) was able to hold on for the win despite facing nine second half shots. The lone Bulldog goal came late in the contest when foul in the box resulted in a penalty kick for FSU's Bri Rogers. Despite Rogers connecting on the penalty kick, NMU managed to hold on for the final 10 minutes to secure a 2-1 victory.
Frontuto finished the game with five saves to bring her season total to 70, currently enough for fourth best in the conference. Just a freshman, Frontuto moved up to 13th in Wildcat history in career saves.
Sunday's contest with Grand Valley State University will be senior day for the Wildcats with five seniors and a junior who will be graduating this year being honored prior to the contest. The Matchup is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
