Wildcat Women's Basketball Upended by No. 1 Ashland

ASHLAND, Ohio — No. 1 Ashland upended the Northern Michigan women's basketball team Saturday at the Kates Gymnasium to halt its four-game winning streak.

The Eagles, now 16-0 (8-0 GLIAC), toppled the Wildcats by a 103-55 margin. Ashland, which has been ranked first in the nation for three-straight weeks, has posted 90 or more points against 11 opponents this season.

Northern Michigan began to heat up in the second half, recording 36 points and outscoring the Eagles, 23-20, in the fourth quarter. Overall, the Wildcats shot 45.0 percent from the floor, 42.9 from beyond the three-point arc and 76.2 from the charity stripe.

Jessica Schultz led Northern Michigan with 17 points while Taylor Hodell came off the bench to contribute 14. Hodell also hauled in a game-best eight rebounds, three of which were offensive.

The first half was the difference in the game. After running out to a 31-17 lead in the first quarter, Ashland continued to pour it on in the second. The Eagles limited the Wildcats to two points in the frame, and scored 28 of their own, to take a 59-19 advantage into the break. 

With the loss, Northern Michigan falls to 10-4 (5-2 GLIAC). The Wildcats, who became the second GLIAC team to reach the 10-win plateau on Thursday at Tiffin, stay on the road next week, taking on Saginaw Valley State on Jan. 12 and Wayne State on Jan. 14.
