Box Score MARQUETTE, Mich. — The Northern Michigan men's soccer team fell to Saginaw Valley State, 1-0, Friday afternoon at the NMU Soccer Field.
The Cardinals opened the scoring in the 23rd minute of the match and held the Wildcats at bay the rest of the way. Connor Keane made six saves, including five in the second half, to earn the shutout.
Northern Michigan almost opened the scoring in the 10th minute of the match when Ívar Árnason found a lane and fired a shot that rang off the post and out.
The Wildcats began buzzing in the final five minutes of the match. In the 86th minute, Sam Popp nearly evened the score, but a Saginaw Valley State defender bailed out Keane and cleared the ball out of danger before it could cross the line.
Then, in the final seconds, Northern Michigan was awarded a corner kick. Tristan Reagan came up with the Edgar Astorga kick and fired a shot on net, but Keane was there to make the save.
Filippo Torelli made a season-high nine saves. Popp and Árnason tied for the team-high with three shots each.
With the loss, the Wildcats' season-long three-game win streak was snapped. Northern Michigan returns to action Sunday, hosting Northwood at 4 p.m.
