Box Score SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. — The Northern Michigan volleyball team moved to 2-0 in GLIAC play by sweeping Lake Superior State on the road Saturday afternoon.
The Wildcats won by 25-13, 25-21 and 25-20 margins to secure their third-straight victory and improve to 7-4 overall.
"This was a good win for us today after a trip and fast turnaround," head coach Dominic Yoder said. "LSSU was scrappy; they kept the pressure on us, and consistent offense was key to the win."
In the opening set, Northern Michigan posted a .417 hitting percentage and limited the Lakers to a meager .087 mark. Down, 6-5, early in the match, the Wildcats went on a 9-1 run to build a 14-7 advantage. They would lead by as many as 10, at 18-8 and 19-9.
Northern Michigan carried that momentum into the second set, racing out to a 7-3 lead. This time, Lake Superior State responded, using a 3-0 run to draw back within a single point. The Wildcats then built a three-point cushion with a 3-0 run of their own, which would prove to be the difference. The Lakers would again rally, but they would never manage to tie the score.
In the final set, Northern Michigan overcame an early 8-5 deficit to earn its third sweep of the season. With the teams tied at 10 apiece, the Wildcats went on a 10-4 run to put the set out of reach. While the Lakers would regroup, winning three-straight points late to pull back within two, it wouldn't be enough.
Marta Fraga Guntin (9) and Madison Whitehead (8) were the team leaders in kills. Fraga Guntin also led the team in digs (9) while Jami Hogeboom recorded 20 assists.
Bridget Bussell (4), Megan Dahl (3) and Autumn Monsma (2) each posted multiple service aces.
"Our serving was very good and allowed our defense and transitional offense to work smoothly," Yoder said. "Offensively, Marta and Madison led us with smart shots."
After playing Cedarville in non-conference action Sept. 22 at 6 p.m., Northern Michigan continues GLIAC play on the road at Tiffin (Sept. 23, 7 p.m.) and Ashland (Sept. 24, 2 p.m.).
