Box Score MARQUETTE, Mich. — Casey Durand found the back of the net in the 87th minute of the match to pull the Northern Michigan women's soccer team within a single goal, but Michigan Tech held on to win, 2-1, Saturday afternoon at the NMU Soccer Field.
In the middle of the first half, Jessica Splittgerber scored two goals in a six-minute span to give the Huskies the lead, which they would never relinquish.
Splittgerber's first goal came minutes after Caroline Glantz denied Jacqueline Mielke on a point-blank try from inside the box and then smothered the ball before a charging Kathryn Fife could tap it into the net. Shortly after that, on a give-and-go with Andrea Zubke, Marisa DeMario sent a booming shot on net that Glantz tipped off the crossbar and out.
Splittgerber broke through in the 24th minute, taking a cross from Mielke on the left edge of the box and drilling the ball past a sprawling Glantz. She struck again in the 30th minute, again taking a cross from Mielke and threading the ball into the left corner of the net.
Durand's goal, her second of the season, came on a transition play after Alexandra Simmons denied Fife. Durand carried the ball into the offensive zone, and Kirsen Hudak came out of the net to challenge her. In the resulting collision, the ball trickled into the net before a Michigan Tech defender could get back to clear it to safety.
Glantz finished with 10 saves while Simmons made four. Allyssa Milam led the Wildcats with two shots on net.
Northern Michigan returns to action at NMU Soccer Field next weekend, hosting Grand Valley State (Sept. 23, 4 p.m.) and Ferris State (Sept. 25, 1 p.m.).
