Box Score Duluth, Minn. — The Northern Michigan women's soccer team fell to Minnesota Duluth, 2-1, Sunday afternoon.
The Wildcats held off the Bulldogs until the 45th minute when Destiny Schmitz managed to get the ball past Alexandra Simmons, bringing the score to 1-0.
Fifteen minutes into the second, the Bulldogs tacked up a foul and Allyssa Milam took the free-kick. Milam centered the ball and Madison Hamilla took a shot on goal, but it was smothered by Jordan Melby at 59:42.
In the 78th minute, the Bulldogs brought up their score to 2-0 when Skye Finley sent the ball just into the net off her free-kick. The ball hit the crossbar and went past Simmons.
Minnesota Duluth's second goal did not go unanswered. In the 82nd minute, Carmen Villarruel was fed the ball and found the back of the net, getting it past Jordan Melby.
Hamilla and Villarruel led the Wildcats with two shots each, both shots on goal. Seven Wildcats attempted shots. The Bulldogs had the shots on goal advantage, 12-7. Simmons finished her first game of the season with 10 saves.
The Wildcats return to action this weekend, Sept. 17, to host Michigan Tech at the NMU Soccer Field.
