Box Score MARQUETTE, Mich. — Jaranta Lewis caught an 18-yard touchdown pass with nine seconds remaining in regulation to send the 2016 Miner's Cup showdown with Michigan Tech into bonus time, but the Northern Michigan football team ultimately fell, 51-45, Saturday afternoon at the Superior Dome.
Only 52 seconds were left on the clock when the Huskies took advantage of a blocked field goal to take a 45-38 edge. Kevin Miller capped the abbreviated drive with a four-yard touchdown rush.
Keshawn Walker caught the resulting kickoff in the end zone and sprinted 59 yards down the field, breaking multiple tackles to give Shaye Brown favorable field position to orchestrate the game-tying drive.
Brown found Michael Akinlade and Julian Crum on back-to-back plays to gain 14 yards. Then, after Jake Mayon carried the ball nine yards to the Husky 18-yard line, Brown found Lewis in the very back of the end zone for the score.
In overtime, both teams failed to kick a field goal. Michigan Tech closed out the game in the second overtime period on a nine-yard John Williams touchdown rush.
In the first quarter, the Huskies jumped out to a 2-0 lead when Cody Goldsworthy sacked Brown in the end zone at the 5:51 mark. On the kick off, La'Ryan Johnson forced a fumble, and D'Jon Meek recovered the ball at the Michigan Tech 44. Mayon capped the resulting drive with a three-yard touchdown rush.
Michigan Tech regained the lead at 11:47 of the second quarter when Alex Sherbinow found the end zone on a 4th and one. Northern Michigan responded on its next drive when Mayon found a seam and then broke multiple tackles en route to a 51-yard score.
The Wildcats scored the final two touchdowns of the first half to go into the locker room with a 28-16 advantage. First, Paris Woods corralled a 13-yard pass from Brown with 2:43 on the clock. Then, with just 41 seconds remaining, Akinlade caught a deep ball from Brown down the sideline for a 63-yard score, the first of his collegiate career.
Michigan Tech tied the game at 31 with 3:08 remaining in the third quarter, but Woods gave Northern Michigan the lead entering the fourth quarter by outsprinting a Husky for a deep ball to score a 46-yard touchdown with just 29 seconds left on the clock.
Michigan tied the game at the 12:29 mark of the fourth quarter on a Cowie seven-yard quarterback keeper. That set up Miller's go-ahead score and Lewis's game-tying touchdown.
Mayon ran for a career-high 240 yards. Brown threw for 293 yards and four touchdowns on 23 for 33 passing. His primary target was Woods, who totaled 109 yards and two touchdowns on four catches.
Pat Ryan led the Wildcat defense with 13 tackles. William Brice recorded one sack.
With the loss, Northern Michigan drops to 3-7 (3-6 GLIAC). The Wildcats close the 2016 campaign Nov. 12 at Tiffin. Kick off is scheduled for 1:30 p.m.
