Box Score MARQUETTE, Mich. — The Northern Michigan volleyball team swept Lake Superior State to run its winning streak to three matches Friday afternoon at Vandament Arena.
The Wildcats topped the Lakers, 25-15, 25-20 and 25-19. They limited Lake Superior State to a meager .063 hitting percentage en route to their victory.
In the first set, Northern Michigan ran out to a 10-5 lead and never allowed the Lakers back within five points.
The second set was tighter, and the teams traded points until the Wildcats used a 9-1 run to take a 13-5 lead. Lake Superior State rallied with a 5-1 run to pull back within four points and later drew within two by taking 10 of the next 18 points. But Northern Michigan closed out the set with a 3-0 run.
In the third set, the Wildcats built a 12-6 advantage with a 7-1 run. The Lakers used an 8-3 run to pull within a single point, but Northern Michigan responded. With Lynzi Svoboda serving, the Wildcats used a 5-0 run to build a 20-14 advantage, effectively sealing their win.
Madison Whitehead and Bridget Bussell tied for the match high with nine kills. Autumn Monsma recorded 15 digs while Jami Hogeboom notched 28 assists.
Whitehead now needs 19 kills to reach 1,000 for her career. If she accomplishes the feat against Saginaw Valley State, she'll be the 16th Wildcat in program history to do so.
During the match, the Wildcats honored their seniors: Bussell, Megan Crane, Megan Dahl, Marta Fraga Guntin and Meghan Supple.
Northern Michigan's seventh sweep of the season improved its record to 16-14 (7-9 GLIAC). The Wildcats wrap up the regular season tomorrow by hosting Saginaw Valley State at 4 p.m.
