Box Score

MARQUETTE, Mich. — The Northern Michigan hockey team fell to Michigan Tech, 5-1, Saturday night in front of a near sellout crowd at the Berry Events Center.

Every goal in the game was scored on special teams, including two 5-on-3 strikes and two shorthanded tallies.

The Huskies scored three special-teams goals in the final seven minutes of the opening stanza to put the Wildcats in an early hole.

First, at 13:52 while shorthanded, Dylan Steman tipped a pass and then beat Jordan Klimek to the puck in the neutral zone. Steman raced down the ice and slammed on the brakes to pull Atte Tolvanen out and tap the puck into the empty net.

Then, after Collin Peters was assessed a five-minute major for checking from behind and Luke Voltin was called for hooking after a scrum, Michigan Tech scored two man advantage goals, one a 5-on-3 marker at 17:56 and the other a 5-on-4 tally at 18:36.

The Huskies widened their lead in the second period, netting a power-play goal and a shorthanded tally. At 12:14, they struck on a man advantage right off a face-off, with Shane Hanna pushing the puck up to Mitch Reinke at the point for the one-timer. Then, at 17:01 while killing a Gavin Gould five-minute major, Michael Neville scored a goal on a transition play.

Robbie Payne got the Wildcats on the board 50 seconds into the final frame. Dominik Shine fired a shot on net from the middle of the circles, and Gerard Hanson sent the rebound off of Angus Redmond's pads. Payne scooped up Hanson's rebound at the left edge of the crease and beat Redmond top shelf.

With the loss, Northern Michigan falls to 2-5-1 (1-4-1 WCHA). The Wildcats return to the ice next weekend when they travel to Madison, Wis. to face Wisconsin Nov. 4-5.

NOTES: Northern Michigan leads the all-time series, 69-59-14 ... The attendance was 4,075 ... The teams combined to take 65 minutes worth of penalties on 20 infractions ... The Wildcats held a 30-23 advantage in shots on goal ... Shine's assist was his first point of the 2016-17 campaign ...
