Box Score MARQUETTE, Mich. — Alexandra Simmons made a career-best 13 saves to lead the Northern Michigan women's soccer team to a 0-0 draw with Ashland Sunday afternoon at the NMU Soccer Field.
Before the game, the Wildcats honored their seniors: Kelsa Dykehouse, Gabriella Garza, Caroline Glantz, Paula Hafner, Rachel LaManna, Wynona Maravilla, Simmons, Carmen Villarruel and Natalie Yeck.
The Eagles, who entered the game tied for second in the GLIAC standings, built a 7-1 advantage in shots on goal during the first half. In the 40th minute, Madison Hamilla broke through, firing a shot that Courtney Barker managed to smother.
The second half was more even, with Ashland holding a slight 3-2 edge in shots on goal. Northern Michigan tested Barker in the first 15 minutes of the frame, forcing her to deny Allyssa Milam and Hafner bids to keep the game scoreless.
Simmons made three saves in overtime to maintain the deadlock and earn her eighth career shutout. In the final minute of the second bonus time period, Milam nearly lifted the Wildcats to their second double overtime victory of the weekend, but Barker was able to turn her header shot aside.
Simmons's save total matched her career high, set in a 0-0 tie with Findlay on Oct. 2, 2016. It was the fourth time in her career that she reached the double digits in saves; she also accomplished the feat on Sept. 28, 2013 at Michigan Tech (10) and on Sept. 11, 2016 at Minnesota Duluth (10).
With the tie, Northern Michigan is now unbeaten in its past three games and 3-1-1 in its past five. The Wildcats will close out the regular season Oct. 28 at rival Michigan Tech.
