MIDLAND, Mich. — The Northern Michigan women's basketball team fell at Northwood, 76-46, Saturday afternoon at the Riepma Arena.

Northwood ran out to a quick 20-8 advantage by the 2:05 mark in the opening quarter. The Wildcats struggled with turnovers in the first half, but Darby Youngstrom was able to find an open Bre Gaspervich on the perimeter to cut the deficit to 10, at 23-13, with 57 seconds to play.

Following a Timberwolves layup, Taylor Hodell beat the buzzer with a layup of her own to bring the Wildcats within nine, at 24-15, at the end of one.

After a Hodell free throw, the Wildcats trailed by six, 24-18, with 9:20 to play in the second quarter. Northwood continued to find the basket, growing an 11-point lead with 6:05 on the clock. Hodell brought the Wildcats within eight, at 29-21, following her three-point play after a made layup and free throw.

The Timberwolves answered with a 12-1 run to close out the half, sending Northern Michigan to the locker room behind, 41-22.

Youngstrom knocked down both of her free throws to open the second half and cut the deficit to 19, 45-26, with 7:09 on the clock. Northwood answered by going on an 8-0 run to grow its lead to 53-26. The Timberwolves opened the final quarter of play by extending their lead to 32, at 70-38, and putting the game out of reach.

Hodell lead the Wildcats with 13 points and five rebounds. Alyson Matkovich added 11 points and seven rebounds.

With the loss, Northern Michigan moves to 8-12 (7-7 GLIAC) on the season. The Wildcats return home to face rival Michigan Tech Monday at 6 p.m.
