Wildcats Pick Up 82-69 Road Win Over Northwood

MIDLAND, Mich. — The Northern Michigan men's basketball team picked up an 82-69 road win over Northwood Saturday afternoon at Riepma Arena.

The teams traded baskets in the opening minutes until the Wildcats began a 13-0 run to put the Wildcats up 12, 15-3, following a Terry Nash made layup and free throw. Northern Michigan continued to grow its lead after Kenny Williams found Jordan Perez for a three, which extended the Wildcat lead to 13, at 20-7, with 12:56 to play in the half.

Northwood regrouped, using a 9-3 run to cut the lead to seven, 23-16, with 10:29 on the clock. The Wildcats answered with a 13-2 run of their own, highlighted by an Isaiah Johnson three pointer to put the lead back up to 18.

After the teams traded points, Johnson found Perez from downtown to put Northern Michigan up 21, 42-21, with 2:25 left in the first half. With three seconds remaining, Naba Echols connected with Perez for three, sending the Wildcats into the locker room with a 45-27 advantage. At the half, Perez led the Wildcats with 12 points, all of which were scored from behind the arc.

Northwood came out of the break hot, cutting the Northern Michigan lead down to 12, 51-39, with 16:06 to play. Marcus Hall answered quickly with a shot from three-point range to put Northern Michigan ahead, 56-39, with 15:04 remaining.

The Wildcats continued to pour it on offensively. With 10:52 to play, Donnell Cegers tipped a Williams missed jump shot to give the Wildcats their largest lead of game, a 24-point, 66-42, advantage.

The Timberwolves battled their way back within 12 by the 4:54 mark. Northern Michigan put the game out of reach with a 10-2 run, highlighted by three pointers from Hall and Echols that ran the score to 82-62 by the 2:50 mark.

The Wildcats had four players reach double digits in scoring: Hall (19), Perez (16), Nash (11) and Johnson (11). Northern Michigan shot 52.4 percent from three and finished 15 of 15 from the free throw line.

With the win, Northern Michigan moves to 6-12 (4-10 GLIAC) on the season. The Wildcats return to action Monday, hosting rival Michigan Tech at 8 p.m.
