NMU Women's Basketball Cruises Past LSSU

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. – Northern Michigan University women's basketball held Lake Superior State to 16-48 (.333) shooting as they went on to defeat the Lakers 69-49 in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action.  The Wildcats ended the game shooting 24-40 (.600) and 6-14 (.429) from beyond the arc as they improved to 16-8 on the year with a 14-6 record in conference play.

A layup from sophomore guard Bre Gaspervich capped off a 15-4 run that gave the Wildcats a 27-14 with 6:07 left to play in the first half.  NMU was able to extend their lead out to a 34-17 halftime score with a layup from senior forward Nea Makela.

Senior guard Alyssa Colla scored 14 points in the opening half as NMU shot 12-17 (.706) and 4-7 (.571) from behind the three-point line in the half.  The Wildcat defense held the Lakers to 7-24 (.292) shooting without a three-point basket.

Northern Michigan opened the second half with a 20-5 run extending their lead to a 47-19 advantage with 15:22 left in the game.  The NMU lead built to as large as 30 at a 60-30 score with 7:35 remaining to play before the Wildcats were able to cruise to the 69-49 road victory.

Colla finished with a game-high 22 points as she moved to fifth all-time for scoring at NMU becoming the fifth player in school history to reach 1,500 career points.

Senior forward Abbey DeBruin finished the game with four rebounds as she became the 18th player in NMU history to reach 500 career rebounds.

Gaspervich finished with 13 points and senior guard Lauren Gruber and Makela each finished with 11 points to round out the double-digit scorers for the Wildcats.

Makela also pulled down a game-high seven rebounds in the win with Colla and Gaspervich each recording four assists.

Northern Michigan finishes the weekend travelling to Northwood Saturday, Feb. 21 for a 1 p.m. tip-off.
