Box Score 2 LIVONIA, Mich. – Northern Michigan University sophomore Paula Hafner scored on a penalty kick at the 92-minute mark to lift the Wildcats women's soccer team, 3-2, over Madonna Sunday in overtime in their final nonconference match up of the regular season.
The first 12-minutes of action saw four goals scored and then the scoring settled down the remainder of the game until Hafner connected on her PK in overtime.
The win moves NMU to 2-4-1 overall while Madonna moved to 4-3 on the campaign.
"It was a great team win on the road today," said NMU head coach Matt Granstrand. "Madonna is a well coached and tough team to play. It took every player contributing to get the result."
Jessica Witt scored first for Madonna in the first minute of action (:36) on a cross from Annette Somerclk from six yards out inside the box.
Hafner then tied the game for the Wildcats in the 7th minute (6:31) of play when she took one touch and fired the ball at the Madonna goalkeeper who missed the save opportunity.
Senior Ashley Katers gave the Wildcats a 2-1 lead just over a minute later (7:59) when she fired in the rebound from a shot from sophomore Wynona Maravilla.
Witt then scored again for Madonna in the 12th minute (11:10) off a corner kick to the left side of the net.
The game was held scoreless through the remainder of regulation before Hafner scored the golden goal.
NMU outshot 13-5 and had a 9-4 advantage in shots on goal. Hafner recorded five of those shots, four of which were on net. Sophomore goalkeeper Alexandra Simmons made two saves in net for the Wildcats to improve her record on the season to 1-1-0.
The Wildcats return home for a weekend of Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference action hosting Walsh at 4 p.m. Friday (Oct. 3) and Ohio Dominican at noon on Sunday (Oct. 5).
