Box Score 2 MARQUETTE, Mich. – Goals from sophomore Paula Hafner and senior Kim Rietveld lifted the Northern Michigan University soccer team to their first victory of the season 2-1 over visiting Minnesota-Duluth Friday at the NMU Soccer Field.
The win pushes NMU's season record to 1-2-0 while Minnesota-Duluth remains winless at 0-3-0.
Hafner scored her goal early on a penalty kick in the second minute (1:28).
The Bulldogs netted the equalizer in the 11th minute when Maureen Stormont took a feed from Kelli Hannah 20-yards out and chipped the ball past the keeper.
Rietveld sealed the victory for the Wildcats in the 68th minute (67:48). Freshman Lindsey Tuggle played the ball to Rietveld who sent the ball into the near post from just outside the box.
"It was a great first win for us," said assistant coach Kaylah Hollen. "We had the potential throughout the entire season to do this well. This is definitely a good win, this team has already played Italian teams and two of the top DII teams in the nation so it was a great win."
The Wildcats were outshot in the contest 29-9 including a 12-6 deficit in shots on goal. The Bulldogs had a 17-4 advantage in the first frame and a 12-5 advantage in the second.
Sophomore goalkeeper Caroline Glantz played all 90-minutes in goal for the Wildcats making 10 saves. Jordan Melby took the loss for the Bulldogs playing the full game with four saves to her credit.
Hafner led the Wildcats with three shots including two on goal while Carmen Villaruel had two shots for NMU. UMD's Stormont led all players with eight shots on goal while Sheridan Reiners had six shots.
