NMU Men's Basketball Drops GLIAC Matchup At Michigan Tech

HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University men's basketball team lost a 69-58 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Conference matchup to instate rival Michigan Tech Monday (Feb. 3) at the Student Development Center in Houghton.

The Wildcats dropped to 4-14 overall and 3-11 in the GLIAC. The Huskies are now 14-6 and 10-5 in the conference.

At the half, the Huskies led, 32-29. The first half included 11 lead changes and four ties. NMU shot 12-27 (44.4 percent) from the floor and outrebounded the Huskies 15-14 in the first half. Junior forward Chavis Mattison led the Wildcats with eight points off the bench.

MTU opened the second half on a 7-0 run to take a 39-29 lead. The Wildcats were able to get within four points with 15:27 remaining in the game, but a 14-0 run by the Huskies clinched the game for MTU.

Junior guard Ethan Blackwell, sophomore guard Terry Nash and Mattison led NMU with 13 points each. Mattison led the Wildcats with seven rebounds. The Wildcats shot 24-57 (42.1 percent) for the game and were 6-10 (60 percent) from the free throw line.

MTU was led by Ben Stelzer with 19 points and Austin Armga added 13 points. The Huskies shot 21-45 (46.7 percent) for the game, and outrebounded NMU, 33-31.

NMU continues its three game road stretch this weekend as the Wildcats travel to Grand Valley State University Thursday (Feb. 6) and Ferris State University Saturday (Feb. 8).
