NMU Volleyball Sweeps Lakers in Straight Sets

MARQUETTE, Mich. - Northern Michigan University Volleyball (13-13, 13-4 GLIAC) won in commanding fasion over Lake Superior State by scores of 25-15, 25-14 and 25-20.  The Wildcats spread the ball around as three different NMU players recorded eight or more kills with no one reaching double digits.

The Wildcats opened the match scoring eight of the first 10 points forcing a Lake Superior State timeout.  NMU was able to stay in control the entirety of the set as they went on to win the set 25-15. 

Northern Michigan recorded a hitting percentage of .452 in the set with four different Wildcats getting three or more kills.  The defense for NMU recorded sideouts in 14 of a possible 16 situations for a sideout efficiency of 87%.

Lake Superior State took an early 5-4 lead to start the first set before NMU went on a 6-1 run to take a 10-6 lead.  The Wildcats used this momentum to slowly pull away from Lake Superior, eventually taking the set at 25-14.

NMU continued to hit well with a hitting percentage of .269, while they continued their sideout dominance with a 92% efficiency (13-14).

The Lakers came out with an early 12-10 lead in the third set, similarly to the second.  Northern Michigan then was able to score the next five points for the 15-12 lead.  The Wildcats never looked back as freshman middle hitter Kayla Chosa closed out the match with a kill at 25-20. 

Sophomore outside hitter Alex Larsen and freshman middle hitter Madison Whitehead each had a game-high nine kills, while junior outside hitter Lisa Studnicka recorded eight kills.

Defensively, Chosa finished the match with a block solo and three block assists, while junior libero Alex Berger dug up a game-high nine balls.

"We served really aggressively, and our serve receive was spot on," commented Head Coach Dominic Yoder after the victory.  "I'm happy for the way they moved in serve receive, especially.  We stuck to our game plan and the setters did a good job setting up the game plan.  Overall, I'm pretty happy about our performance."

Northern Michigan closes out the regular season tomorrow, Saturday, Nov. 8 when they host Northwood at 4 p.m. in Vandament Arena.
