Box Score MARQUETTE, Mich. - Northern Michigan University volleyball (12-12, 12-3 GLIAC) was able to cruise past the Wayne State Warriors in straight sets (25-15, 25-20, 25-23). The Wildcats hit .237 for the match and had five blocks in the victory.
"Our serving was outstanding tonight," commented Head Coach Dominic Yoder. "We really pressed the issue with them and it helped us find a rhythm offensively. We did make a lot of serving mistakes, but the ones we did put in play we really forced them out of their system and got them into our defensive system."
Northern Michigan opened the set hitting .471 as they jumped out to an early 16-7 lead. NMU was able to hold a 17-12 lead before scoring eight of the final 11 points to win the set 25-15. Sophomore middle hitter Anna Aycock led the way with four kills and a hitting percentage of .800. The team did a good job of not letting the Warriors keep possession of the ball with a sideout efficiency of 73%.
The second set was similar as NMU was able to jump out early and found themselves ahead 17-10. The Wildcats continued to hit efficiently and cruised to a 25-20 set win. Junior outside hitter Lisa Studnicka recorded six kills to lead the Wildcats in the set.
Looking for their second straight sweep, the Wildcats opened scoring 15 of the first 21 points. NMU continued to use their momentum to hold a 19-10 advantage before the Warriors went on a 11-4 run bringing the game to 23-21 NMU. The Wildcats used a Studnicka to find themselves with set point at 24-21 on the next point. The Warriors wouldn't go down without a fight as they held off NMU on the first two set points, but the third time proved to be the charm as a kill from freshman middle hitter Madison Whitehead gave NMU the 25-23 win.
Studnicka led the offense with a game-high 13 kills, while Aycock finished with a hitting percentage of .571. Freshman setter Meghan Seymour assisted on 32 of the 40 Wildcat kills.
In the back row, junior libero Alex Berger recorded a game high 12 kills.
Northern Michigan closes out the weekend when they host Saginaw Valley State in Vandament Arena tomorrow, Saturday, Nov. 1 at 4 p.m.
