NMU Hockey Wins At Bemidji State, 4-1

BEMIDJI, Minn. – The Northern Michigan University hockey team scored three second-period goals to pick up a 4-1 Western Collegiate Hockey Association win over Bemidji State Friday at the Sanford Center. 

The win snapped a six-game winless streak for the Wildcats who improved to 7-10-2 with a 5-5-1 WCHA record. The Beavers fell to 5-10-6 with a 5-6-4 record in league play.

"I was real pleased with our effort, I thought we came out and played the way we needed to play," said NMU head coach Walt Kyle. "I saw some real chemistry develop in our lines which was important. Winning tonight gives us an opportunity here we need to take advantage of." 

Bemidji State scored its first and only goal of the game when Nate Arentz took a feed from Graem McCormick at the 2:51 mark of the first period.

NMU then scored four unanswered goals for the win. Sophomore forward Darren Nowick evened the score at 1-1 just 1:34 into the second period as junior forward Ryan Daugherty recorded an assist on the play. 

At the 7:11 mark of the second, freshman forward Shane Sooth scored a power play goal on a feed from senior forward Stephan Vigier and freshman defender Brock Maschmeyer to give NMU a 2-1 lead.

Freshman forward Sami Salminen scored the third goal of the second period for NMU just 16-seconds after Sooth's goal. Sophomore forward Cohen Adair and junior defender Luke Eibler assisted on Salminen's goal. 

Junior forward Reed Seckel set the final score with a power play goal at the 10:51 mark of the third. Freshman forward John Siemer and Nowick recorded assists on the play.

The shots were even at 29-29 while NMU was 2-5 on the power play and BSU was 0-3.

Freshman forward Mathias Dahlstrom recorded 28 saves in goal for the Wildcats improving his record to 6-8-2 on the season. Jesse Wilkins took the loss for the Beavers falling to 0-1-3 on the campaign. 

NMU completes its series at Bemidji State at 8:07 p.m. Eastern on Saturday.
