NMU Hockey Drops Series Finale At Alaska-Anchorage

ANCHORAGE, Alaska – The Northern Michigan University hockey team lost a 4-2 decision at Alaska-Anchorage Saturday to split their Western Collegiate Hockey Association series against the Seawolves Saturday at the Sullivan Arena.

The loss moves NMU to 10-12-2 on the season with an 8-7-1 WCHA record. UAA improved to 13-10-3 overall with a 9-8-3 league mark.

The Seawolves scored two goals in the first period to go up 2-0. The first came at the 12-minute mark when Scott Allen scored a power play goal on a feed from Matt Bailey and Jordan Kwas. Kory Roy then scored an even-strength goal less than two minutes later (13:43) with assists from Hayden Trupp and Andrew Pettit.

Freshman forward Dominik Shine scored the first goal of the contest for the Wildcats at the 12:29 mark of the second period. Shine finished a power-play goal on a feed from junior defenseman Mitch Jones and senior forward Reed Seckel to cut the Alaska-Anchorage lead to 2-1.

Roy scored again for the Seawolves in the third period on a feed from Bailey and Hayden Trupp to take a 3-1 advantage for Alaska-Anchorage at the 8:28 mark of the third.

Seckel scored for the Wildcats just over a minute later (9:24) to move the Wildcats within one goal again. Freshman forward Shane Sooth and Shine assisted on Seckel's goal.

Kwas gave the Seawolves their final two-goal lead, 4-2, at the 11:24 mark of the third when he finished a pass from Blake Leask and Brett Cameron.

Alaska-Anchorage outshot the Wildcats 26-23 but NMU held a 13-8 advantage in the third period.

Freshman goalie Mathias Dahlstrom made 22 saves in net for the Wildcats moving to 9-10-2 with the loss. Chris Kamal improved to 6-3-1 making 21 saves in net for the Seawolves.

NMU was 1-5 on the power play while UAA was 1-3.

The Wiildcats return home at 7:07 p.m. Friday (Jan. 30) hosting Minnesota State-Mankato at the Berry Events Center.
