Wildcats Fall to Saginaw Valley State

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State Cardinal offense proved to be too much for the Northern Michigan University Football Wildcats to handle as the Cardinals dominated the Wildcats enroute to a 52-17 victory on Saturday, November 9.  The Wildcats fall to 3-6 on the year and in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference while the Cardinals improve to an impressive 9-1 overall and 9-0 in the GLIAC.

Saginaw Valley struck first on a 31-yard touchdown reception by Jeff Janis at 10:13 of the first quarter.  The Wildcats got themselves on the board at 3:57 of the first stanza when freshman John Oberheide connected on a 26-yard field goal to put the 'Cats down 7-3. 

The second quarter proved to be too much for the Wildcats as the Cardinals scored on five possessions.  In the quarter SVSU had four touchdowns and a field goal in scoring 31 unanswered points to put the Cardinals up 38-3 at halftime.

In the second half the Wildcats and Cardinals each found the endzone twice.  SVSU scored on a six-yard run at 11:24 of the third quarter before Wildcat freshman quarterback Shaye Brown found senior Christian Jessie  for a six-yard touchdown pass.  Oberheide made the extra point. Saginaw Valley scored once more in the third quarter on another reception by Jeff Janis.  Wildcats Brown and Jessie connected again, at 12:04 of the fourth quarter for the final touchdown of the game.

The Wildcat offense had 299 yards on 263 yards passing and 36 yards rushing. Shaye Brown finished the day 22 of 46 for263 yards and two touch downs with two interceptions.  The Cardinals had 494 yards of offense on 280 yards passing and 214 yards on the ground. Jon Jennings was 12 of 20 for the Cardinals for 280 yards and four touchdowns. 

Sophomore Marcus Tucker led the Wildcat receivers with five receptions for 93 yards.  Jessie finished the day with seven receptions for 80 yards.  On the ground the Wildcats were led by redshirt freshman Keon Collier with 11 rushes for 29 yards.  Sophomore Wyatt Jurasin had 20 yards on 16 carries for the Wildcats. 

The Wildcats have one remaining game in the 2013 season as they travel to Big Rapids, Mich., to face Ferris State on Saturday, November 16.
