Box Score MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University women's basketball team defeated Finlandia University, 102-40, on Saturday (Nov. 16) in a non-conference game from the Berry Events Center. The Wildcats are now 2-0 on the season.
The Wildcats jumped out of the gates to a 6-0 lead to start the game, with sophomore forward Nea Makela scoring four of the opening points. With under four minutes remaining in the half, the Wildcats led 34-14 and went on a 12-0 run to lead 46-14 with 2:17 left. NMU held a 48-16 advantage at the half.
NMU continued the control of the game in the second half to take their second straight win of the season. Northern outscored the Lions, 56-26, in the second half.
All 14 players entered the scoring column for NMU on the night. Freshman guard Bre Gaspervich led the Wildcats with 11 points on three two-pointers, a shot from beyond the arc and went 2-for-2 at the free throw line. Junior forward Brooke Coenen added 10 points. The Wildcats shot 34-for-80 (45.2 percent) from the floor and were 26-for-34 (76.5 percent) at the free throw line. Coenen led on the boards with seven total rebounds. NMU out rebounded the Lions, 55-47.
Finlandia was led by Marissa Burke with 13 points, while Paige Yoho added eight. The Lions shot 12-for-59 from (20.3 percent) from the floor and were 12-for-15 (80 percent) at the line. Adrianna Osuna led the Lions on 10 rebounds and Haley Gervais added eight.
The Wildcats return to the Berry Event Center next Sunday (Nov. 24) in a non-conference game against Lewis University at 1 p.m.
