2021-22: Led the team in the 20k Freestyle at the NCAA Championships with a time of 43:34.2 and placed seventh overall. His finish at the NCAA Championships earned him All-American Second-Team, his third career All-American recognition. At the NCAA Central Region Championships, he won both the 20k Freestyle with a time of 55:48.5 and the 10k Classic at a time of 21:48.0. Won both events at Mt. Itasca, the MTU Invite, and the CCSA Championships.
2020-21: At the CCSA Championships he placed second in both the 10K Classic and 20K Freestyle. At regionals, he finished second in the 10K Freestyle with a time of 27:08.4 and first in the 20K Freestyle with a time of 51:55. At the NCAA Skiing Championships, he landed on the Men's 20K Freestyle First-Team with a third-place finish in the men's 20K Freestyle with a time of 48:49.4. He also competed in the 10K Classic at this event finishing 11th.
2019-20: Earned All-American honors at the NCAA Championships with a 20th place finish in the 10K classic, timing in at 25:18.7. Placed second in both races at the NCAA Regionals, finishing the 20K freestyle with a time of 58.33.4 and the 10K classic in 24:18.6. Second at the CCSA Championships with a time of 24:44.70 in the 10K freestyle and fifth in the 20K classic.
2018-19: 11th in the 20K classic and 16th place finish in the 10K freestyle at the NCAA Championships. Named First Team All-CCSA. All-Region A-Team. 17th overall in the 15K classic interval start at the U.S. Nationals. Took 24th in the classic sprints.
2017-18: Earned All-America honors as a freshman after a 10th-place finish in the 10K classic race at the NCAA Championships. Also competed in the 20K freestyle race at the NCAA Championships finishing 18th. Earned All-CCSA honors earning the most points throughout the season and a runner-up performance in the 20K freestyle at the CCSA Championships. Took the top spot in the 10K classic at the Birkie CCSA Races and the 15K classic race at the Minnesota-Duluth CCSA Races. Named first-team All-CCSA after the season.
Before NMU: Racing for Koll II, Banerud's best result came in the 2016-17 season when he finished seventh in the final race of the Norwegian Cup. He also recorded five top 12 finishes in the Norwegian Cup for juniors who holds the Oslo Circuit Champion title.
