Nilssen and Richter Lead the Way in 40k at SuperTour Finals

LAKE PLACID, N.Y. - The NMU women's nordic ski season came to an end today with a long one, competing in the 40k classic mass start at the SuperTour Finals.

Of 46 skiers, there was a field of 33 who completed the marathon of a race, with finishers completing the distance race anywhere from two hours and fifteen minutes to three hours and sixteen minutes.

Four 'Cats began the race but two crossed the line, those being Henriette Nilssen and Merle Richter finishing just two places away from each other in 23rd and 25th overall.

Down to 26th at the 11.25k marker, Nilssen jumped to 21st just 5k later, and would hold the 21st spot until the 26.25k marker. Nilssen dropped back to 23rd at 27.5k, and would hold that the rest of the way to finish 23rd overall, 13th among collegiate athletes and 15th among athletes under 23.

Richter had a steady race, opening her race in the same position she finished, and fluctuating anywhere from 22nd to 27th throughout the beginning of the race. Richter settled into the 24th spot at the 16.25k marker, 25th at the 23.75k marker, and 26th at the 26.25k mark. Richter held the 26th spot until the final mark, moving up one spot to settle into 25th overall,17th among collegiate athletes, and eighth among the 'Senior' skiers.

Both Victoria Dybwad and Jordan Parent DNF; Dybwad after the 8.75k marker, and Parent after the 5k marker.

The top was dominated by the SMS pro team, as Jessie Diggins and Julia Kern claimed gold and silver just 13 seconds apart at 2:16:45.3 and 2:16:59.2. Bronze was claimed by Erica Laven of the University of Utah, alomst six second behind the lead at 2:22:30.2.
