PREVIEW: Wrestling heads to the Lower Peninsula for three days

MARQUETTE, Mich. - The Northern Michigan women's wrestling team is set to head downstate for three days of competition over the weekend.

The Wildcats will first be in Alma for duals against Alma and Davenport on Friday starting at 5 p.m. The squad will then travel to Adrian to take part in duals on Saturday at 11 a.m. followed by the Adrian Invite on Sunday, also at 11 a.m.

Last Time Out
NMU opened its regular season at the Simpson College Luther Hill Invitational, with four Wildcats placing in the top-5 in their respective weight classes and the team collecting 73.5 points.

Kailyn Garrett finished in 2nd place at 235 for 19 team points. Garrett picked up three victories in a row, all by fall, before falling in the championship match by tech fall. 

Alissa Caltagirone accrued 15 points for Northern in the 145 weight class, finishing in 4th place. Caltagirone was victorious by fall in three matchups before falling in the third place bout.

Sophia Bassino also added 15 points for Northern at 160 for another 4th place finish. She went 3-2 in her matches, with two wins by fall and another by tech fall. 

Clarissa Wangen also placed inside the top-5 at 180, totaling 12.0 points. Wangen went 2-2 in her contests with one victory by fall. 


About the 'Cats
  • Yu Sakamoto is ranked 4th nationally in the pound-for-pound rankings, and first in the 117 weight class, by The Open Mat. She recently earned the world champion title at the U23 World Championships in Albania. 
  • Zhivanna Magdaleno slots in at 10th in the 124 weight class while Alissa Caltagirone is ranked 16th at 145. They each competed at Nationals a season ago.
  • As a team, Northern Michigan is ranked 12th in tournament rankings and 18th in team dual rankings. 
  • Northern enters its 4th season as a program in 2024-25.
  • NMU has ten regional top-5 finishes, with Diana Dzasezava winning in 2023. 
  • The program has produced two All-Americans and 12 Scholar All-Americans over its three-year history.
  • Tony DeAnda was named the Regional Coach of the Year in 2023.
