MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University Department of Athletics is proud to announce the newest inductees to the NMU Sports Hall of Fame. The 2023 class includes Dean Antos (hockey), Kameron Burmeister (cross country/track), Jovan Dewitt (football), Robert Fehrs (wrestling), Halvor Maartmann (Nordic skiing), and the 1979-80 and 1980-81 men's basketball teams.
A ceremony to honor the inductees will be held Friday, Sept. 15, at the Northern Center. They will again be recognized during halftime of the Homecoming football game versus UW-La Crosse, which takes place at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 16, at NMU's Superior Dome.
Dean Antos
Hockey | Class of 1991
A four-year letter winner from 1987-91, Dean Antos played in 162 games for the Wildcats, tallying 75 goals, 95 assists, 170 points, and 33 power-play goals. Antos was captain of Northern's National Championship team in 1991. In the NCAA title game, he scored the opening goal and assisted on the triple-overtime game-winner in the 8-7 triumph over Boston University. Antos was a 1989 and 1991 All-WCHA Honorable Mention pick and is currently top-10 in program history in games played (5th), goals (10th), and points (10th), as well as 14th in program history in assists. Antos led the 1988-89 team in power-play goals with 12.
Currently, Antos resides in Viking, Alberta.
Kameron Burmeister
Cross Country / Track and Field | Class of 2018
Burmeister was a four-year letter winner from 2014-18. A dominant performer in her first year, won five of the team's six cross-country events and was named team MVP. Burmeister became Northern's first cross-country All-American since 2005 when she earned that honor in 2016; she attained All-America status again in 2017. She was an indoor track and field All-American in 2017 and an All-American in both 2017 and 2018 for her outdoor track and field performances, specializing in the long-distance events. Burmeister was All-Region Team and All-GLIAC First Team all four years in cross country, as well as earning the GLIAC Commissioner's Award in 2017. She was All-Region for track in 2018 and All-GLIAC from 2016-2018. Burmeister holds a combined seven NMU records in the two sports.
Currently, she resides in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
Jovan Dewitt
Football | Class of 1999
Dewitt was a linebacker for the Wildcats from 1993-96. He was named the team's Most Valuable Linebacker in 1995 and 1996, and was a Dr. C.M. Frank Honorable Mention All-American in 1995. Dewitt also was recognized on the All-MIFC Defense First Team and NCAA All-Northeast Second Team Defense in 1995, and was All-MIFC Defense First Team and NCAA II All-Northeast Region Second Team in 1996. The latter year, he was selected MIFC Defensive Back of the Year. Dewitt served the NMU football team as a student assistant coach in 1997 and as a graduate assistant in 2000 and 2001.
Today, Dewitt resides in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
Robert Fehrs
Men's Wrestling | Head Coach
Robert Fehrs, who resides in Hummelstown, Pennsylvania, was the head coach of the NMU men's wrestling team from 1975-78. During his tenure at Northern, Fehrs owned a 36-8 overall record and coached 22 All-Americans, including two Division I All-Americans and two Division II National Champions, and recruited several wrestlers who are now in the NMU Sports Hall of Fame. Each of his four Wildcat teams finished in the top 20 for NCAA D2 Championships (13th, 19th, 13th, and 6th). As an athlete, Robert Fehrs wrestled at the University of Michigan, going 67-5-1. He is a member of the Pennsylvania Wrestling Hall of Fame, the Central Penn All-Sports Hall of Fame, and the National Wrestling Hall of Fame.
Halvor Maartmann
Men's Nordic Ski | Class of 1977
Halvor Maartmann, who resides in Oslo, Norway, was a member of Northern's 1975-76-77 Nordic ski teams. He was a three-time All-American, finishing second overall at the NCAA Championships in 1976. He also placed seventh in 1975 and fourth in 1977. Maartmann was a three-time NCAA Regional Champion, capturing the titles in 1975, 1976 and 1977. Maartman graduated in 3 years with a degree in computer science/mathematics.
1979-80 and 1980-81 Men's Basketball Team
Coached by Glenn Brown, who was named the Mid-Continent Conference Coach of the Year in 1980, Northern's men's basketball teams went 24-6 in 1979-80 and 21-9 in 1980-81, making an NCAA Quarterfinal appearance each year. Mark Mindeman and Ernie Montgomery were named to the Mid-Continent Conference First Team in both 1980 and 1981, while Eric Posey was named to the Second Team in 1981. Mindeman and Montgomery were also named All-NABC District Second Team All-Americans in 1981.
