DULUTH, Minn. - The Northern Michigan alpine ski team competed this weekend at the Lake Superior Divisional Championship, at Spirit Mountain, in Duluth, Minnesota. Coach Lunteigen said that the surface was awesome, meaning conditions were very good for ski racing.
The NMU women's team swept the weekend winning both slalom and giant slalom events. They also won the divisional title. The men's team won the slalom on Saturday, and was second to St. Olaf in the GS on Sunday, leading St. Olaf to beat the men's team in the divisional title by one point overall. Coach Lunteigen said that the women's team skied incredibly well, and while the men's team made some mistakes both Saturday and Sunday, there were still great performances from the athletes. Podium finishes from the weekend began in the women's slalom with a second place from
Reagan Olli, and a 3rd place finish from
Ella Wichert. In women's GS, Reagan was 2nd. In men's slalom, podium finishes for NMU were
Aaron Grzelak in 1st, and
Brad Seaborg in 2nd. For men's GS, Grzelak took 3rd.
The athletes are in the heart of their season, with the regional race coming up in 2 weeks. This will be held at Marquette Mountain, and this race will determine who qualifies for the national championship. Regionals being held at Marquette Mountain gives NMU a great advantage, and they look forward to having fellow students, athletes, friends and family come cheer them on. This will be held February 18 and 19th, first run starting at 10:30 both days. Coach hopes to continue the phenomenal training that the team has been having at Marquette Mountain, and hopes to keep seeing improvement from all athletes over the next coming weeks!
