'Cats Dominate Final Heat, Claim Two Podium Spots

Karsrud and Haugen find the podium - 'Cats represent four of six in finals heat

DULUTH, Minn. - The NMU men's nordic ski team dominated the final heat on Saturday, claiming four of the six spots in the finals and two of the three poodium spots, earning 69 points on day one.

Saturday saw four of the six spots in the final heat of the sprint races occupied by Wildcats, with Kristoffer Karsrud and Mathias Haugen claiming second and third place and Adrik Kraftson in fourth.

The 'Cats had a successful day one on the slopes at the Salomon CXC Cup, sitting first of five teams with 69 points in the freestyle sprint races.

The 'Cats represented four of the six spots in the finals heat, with Kristoffer Karsrud leading the way with a second-place finish. Mathias Haugen and Adrik Kraftson were next at third and fourth, respectively, and Luke Fricker rounded out the finals heat in sixth place.

The men sat first with 69 points, followed by the Michigan Tech men with 65 and the College of Saint Scholastica men with 41. The 'Cats also led the field in the overall standings, with a combined 139 between the men and women, followed by Michigan Tech with 125 and the College of Saint Scholastica with 92.

Saturday Individual Results - Freestyle Spint
Kristoffer Karsrud led the 'Cats with his time of 2:51.79 in the final heat, his best time of the evening, and good enough for a podium finish at second place. Karsrud made it to the final heat after times of 3:00.07 in his quarter-final heat and 2:55.81 in his semi-final heat, finishing second and first in those, respectively.

Mathias Haugen made an impact for the 'Cats in his first race in green and gold, rounding out the podium in third place with his time of 2.53.36 in the final heat. Haugen got there with his times of 2:59.86 in the quarter-final heat and 2:56.61 in his semi-final heat, good for first and second in those events, respectively.

Adrik Kraftson finished fourth in the final heat, first among the men under-20 grouping, with a time of 3:00.14. Kraftson made it to the finals with a time of 2:59.94 and first place in his quarter-final heat and 2:56.97 in the semi-final heat.

Luke Fricker rounded out the final heat in sixth, first among the men under-23 grouping, with his time of 3:01.06. Fricker found his way to the finals heat with times of 2:54.45 and 2:56.53 in his respective quarter-final and semi-final heats, finishing first in both.
