Wrestling prepares for busy weekend downstate

MARQUETTE, Mich. - The Northern Michigan women's wrestling team is set to travel downstate past the mighty Mac for a busy week. NMU will first take on the Alma College Scots Thursday, November 9 at 6 p.m. followed by a two-day meet at Adrian College on Saturday and Sunday, November 11-12.

This is the first dual meet of the season for the Wildcats after competing in a tournament format last weekend at UW-Stevens Point.

Individual Rankings

Noelle Gaffney, a sophomore from Lafayette, New Jersey, slots in at 9th in her weight class (155) entering this week. Last season, Gaffney competed at the National Championships after taking 4th place at the Northwest Regional Qualifier. 

Marisa Roth, a sophomore from Brookfield, Wisconsin, is ranked 10th in the 143 weight class. Last year, she finished in second place at the Northwest Regional Qualifier in the 143 weight class while also competing at the National Championships. Roth also was named a NWCA Scholar All-American. 

Newly in the rankings, Abigale Swanson, a freshman from Rhinelander, Wisconsin, and Mickaela Keane, a freshman from Tinley Park, Illinois, are ranked No. 12 and 13 respectively in the 170 bracket this week.  


A Recap of Weekend

NMU began its season on the road at the Pointer Open in Stevens Point, Wisconsin on Thursday. NMU had two Wildcats finish in the top three in the tournament, while ten others recorded multiple victories on the mat. Natasha Kuberski finished in 2nd place in the 191 bracket after going 2-1, picking up a tech fall win and a decision victory in her matches. Marisa Roth took 3rd in the 143 bracket with a 5-1 mark. She totaled two victories by tech fall, two by decision, and another by fall. Noelle Gaffney finished in 4th place in the 155 bracket, adding three match victories on the mat. Swanson totaled four pins, which ties her career high. As a team, the Cats' accumulated twelve pins, the third highest total at the meet.
