ADRIAN, Mich. - The Northern Michigan University women's wrestling team was in competition at Adrian College over the weekend, with a highlight dual victory over the nationally-ranked host as well as some standout individual performances.
In the duals on Saturday, the Wildcats picked up a highlight win for the program over No. 14 Adrian College, 22-22 by criteria. NMU was also defeated by McKendree 36-4 and North Central College 29-17.
On Sunday, the Wildcats took 7th place of 21 teams at the event, earning 82 points. North Central College took first with 422.5 points. Five Wildcats placed at the meet, including three top-5 finishes.
In the 155 class,
Lydia Krauss took 2nd place with 23 points. Krauss won by fall over Libia Hernandez (Davenport) (Fall 1:13) in the first round. She won by tech fall over Maggie Mann (Siena Heights) (TF-1.5 1:40). Krauss continued to win in the quarterfinal, winning by tech fall over teammate
Noelle Gaffney (Northern Michigan University ) (TF-1.5 5:31). In the semifinal, she won by fall over Aspen Dodge (Adrian College) (Fall 1:01). In the 1st Place match, Malea Palahniuk (North Central College) won by decision over Krauss.
Noelle Gaffney took 5th in the class and earned 15 points. She won by fall over Jazzmine Seely (McKendree) and Grace Doering (Indiana Tech University). She also won by decision over Skylah Chakouian (Elmira) and by tech fall over Jaelynn Trantanella (Siena Heights).
In the 143 class,
Marisa Roth picked up 14.5 points to earn 3rd place. Roth had decision wins over Leslie Monterrosa (Elmira) and Glenda Veiga (Indiana Tech University) before losing by a tech fall in the semifinal to Kendall Bostelman (North Central College).
In the 123 class, Alejandra Perez earned 13.5 points and finished 6th. Perez won by tech fall over Cerenity Bergeron (Siena Heights) and Somaia Elokda (New Jersey City University).
In the 101 class,
Trinity Valentin picked up another 6.5 points for 8th place. Valentin added a win by tech fall over Dyanne Pelaez (New Jersey City University).
Sharon Leon added 3.5 points for the Wildcats in the 130 class, winning by fall over Dafne Aguilar Martinez (Emory & Henry).
Faith Romain got 3 points in the 136 class, winning by fall over Emily Landolf (Lakeland University) and by decision over Erika Novak (Hiram College). The last 3 points came in the 143 class from
Kristyleigh Massey.
