Alexis "Pookie" Gonzalez was named the Assistant Volleyball Coach in February 2020.

Gonzalez comes to NMU after a year long stint at the University of California - Davis where she served as the Aggies' volunteer assistant coach in 2019. 

Prior to her role at UC Davis, Gonzalez spent four years as a student-athlete on Northern Illinois' volleyball team, serving as floor captain all four years. During her career at NIU, she only missed one game as a setter while finishing second in program history and third in Mid-American Conference history with 4,846 assists. Her assist numbers are the most at NIU in the NCAA scoring era (dating back to 2001) and third most in the conference since that scoring style began. 

A two-time All-Mac First Team honoree, she was also named MAC Setter of the Year after her senior season, averaging 10.38 assists per set. Also named to the MAC All-Frehsman Team in 2012, she served as Husky volleyball's representative to the NIU Captains Council from 2013-15 and was a representative on the board of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee in 2015-16.

Upon graduation in 2016, Gonzalez served as the head setting coach for Club Fusion Volleyball in Huntley, Illinois and served as the assistant varsity and head sophomore coach at DeKalb High School where she helped lead the Barbs to a section championship in 2016 and conference and regional titles in 2017.

A kinesiology major and journalism minor at NIU, Gonzalez earned her bachelor's degree in 2016 before completing a master's in sport management in 2018.

A native of Fresno, California, she played club for the Central Cal Volleyball Club, where she helped her team to a fifth place finish in the American Division at Nationals in 2010. While attending Bullard High School in Fresno, she helped the Knights to 70 wins and three County Metro Athletic Conference titles in her four seasons.
