BIG RAPIDS, Mich. – The 2019 Northern Michigan University Volleyball season came to a close Saturday evening as the Wildcats fell to Michigan Technological University by a combined five points in the final two sets in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament Semifinals. The Huskies captured a 3-0 victory in the match.
| THE ACTION
The first set saw a tight match early but Tech was able to jump ahead 15-10 and the two teams continued to trade points until the Huskies took a 25-19 victory.
NMU jumped out to an 11-9 lead in the second set. MTU was able to rebound to pull out to a 17-12 advantage. With the score 20-15, NMU took advantage of three errors from the Huskies to pull within 20-18. Tech answered to make it 22-18 before senior Sarah Kuehn (Green Bay, Wis.) smashed three straight kills to make it 22-21. However, the Huskies scored two points before a kill by sophomore Lizzy Stark (Minneapolis, Minn.) moved it to a 24-22 MTU lead. The Huskies then scored the game winner to win the set 25-22.
The Wildcats started the third set strong as they jumped out to a 7-1 lead on a kill by sophomore Abigail Durecki (South Lyon, Mich.), getting the assist from freshman Lauren Van Remortel (Carmel, Ind.). The Huskies managed to chip into the lead throughout the set to tie it at 20-20. Stark posted two kills but Tech had managed to score four points. With it 24-22, Van Remortel pulled NMU within one, 24-23, by serving an ace. Unfortunately, Tech was able to score the winning point on the next rally and took a 3-0 match win.

Stark led the Wildcats with 12 kills. Durecki posted nine and Kuehn chipped in with seven. Van Remortel finished the match with 32 assists.
| FINISHING THE SEASON
The Wildcats finish the season at 13-16 and 8-8 in the GLIAC while featuring a consistent rotation of eight players in their first or second season of action for NMU.
