NMU Volleyball Sweeps LSSU In Regular Season Finale

SAULT STE MARIE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University Volleyball team concluded their regular season by visiting Lake Superior State University and picked up their sixth sweep of the year and fifth of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference season.

  THE SETS

In the first set, NMU jumped out to a 4-1 lead before LSSU tied it at 5-5. The teams were tied at 8-8 but the Wildcats went on a five-point rally to make it 13-8 with a kill by sophomore Hailey Wickstrom (Calumet, Mich.) to cap the rally.  NMU continued to outdo the Lakers throughout the first set, taking a 25-15 victory with an Abigail Durecki (South Lyon, Mich.) kill from Lauren Van Remortel (Carmel, Ind.) for the freshman-to-freshman connection.

The Wildcats jumped ahead quickly in the second set, leading 13-5. The Lakers managed to pull within 17-12 but kills by Wickstrom and Durecki made it 19-12 and sophomore Lizzy Stark (Minneapolis, Minn.) served up an ace to make it 20-12. LSSU errors preceded another Wickstrom kill, moving the score to 23-17. Two more errors from the Lakers gave NMU a 25-17 third set victory.

LSSU came into the third set strong to take an early lead but NMU was able to tie the set at 11-11. The Lakers then gave the Wildcats three points on errors before Durecki made it 16-12 with a kill. The hosts fought back and tied it at 18-18.

Sophomore Alyssa Milski (Oregon, Wis.) broke the tie with a kill and senior Sarah Kuehn (Green Bay, Wis.) also smashed a kill before another Laker error made it 21-19. Kuehn then added two more kills, along with one from both Stark and Durecki to give the Wildcats a 25-21 victory and the 3-0 sweep.

  STAT LEADERS

Stark ended up leading the team with 15 kills and also added an ace. Durecki added 10 kills and two aces while Wickstrom chipped in with nine kills. Kuehn contributed eight kills.

Van Remortel tallied 33 assists.

Sophomore Alli Yacko (Oak Lawn, Ill.) paced the defense with 22 digs. Freshman Madeline Crowley (Green Bay, Wis.) finished with eight. Crowley also helped out the offense with an ace.

At the net, Kuehn posted a team-best three blocks while Milski and Durecki both had two.

The Wildcats move to 12-15 on the season and will now prepare for the GLIAC Tournament Quarterfinals. The Wildcats will play Wednesday night with their opponent and location still to be determined.
