Volleyball Defeats Wayne State 3-0

MARQUETTE, Mich. – Northern Michigan University Volleyball defeated Wayne State University 3-0 to pick up another Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference sweep.

  GETTING STARTED

The Wildcats started the match on a 10-3 run and eventually pulled ahead to an 18-9 lead. WSU rallied back to 22-17 but sophomore Hailey Wickstrom (Calumet, Mich.) took an assist from freshman Lauren Van Remortel (Carmel, Ind.) for a kill, and sophomore Lizzy Stark (Minneapolis, Minn.) served up an ace to make it 24-17. After two points from Wayne State, Van Remortel found freshman Abigail Durecki (South Lyon, Mich.) for a kill and the winning point, making it 25-19.

  ANOTHER ONE

The second set started close but NMU eventually finished the set on a 10-2 rally to win. Leading 15-12, Stark started the rally with a kill. After an error, Wickstrom smashed a kill, then Kuehn followed two more WSU errors with a kill to make it 22-12. 

After another error from the Warriors, Wickstrom finished the set with three kills around a WSU ball handling error and a kill. Van Remortel tallied two assists and sophomore Alli Yacko (Oak Lawn, Ill.) got one as NMU captured the set 25-14.

Aiding the effort was four blocks from the Wildcats.

  FINISHING THE MATCH

NMU jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the third set but the Warriors rallied to tie it at 7-7. The teams continued to play even and saw it tied at 17-17. After a service error from WSU, sophomore Alyssa Milski (Oregon, Wis.) and Stark sandwiched a Warrior error to make it 21-17.

Kuehn got a kill and Yacko served an ace to answer a WSU point, making it 23-18. Durecki made it 24-20 with a kill then finished the match with another kill to give the Wildcats a 25-21 third set win and the team's second sweep of GLIAC play.

  STAT LEADERS

Stark finished the match with 15 kills to lead the team while Kuehn added nine with three errors. Wickstrom and Durecki both chipped in with seven kills as Wickstrom finished with two errors and Durecki had one. As a team, NMU hit at a .297 clip.

Van Remortel posted 34 assists. The Wildcats also notched seven aces, led by two from Durecki and sophomore Lauren Caprini (St. Charles, Ill.). Yacko, Stark and freshman Madeline Crowley (Green Bay, Wis.) had one ace each.

Defensively, Caprini posted a team-best 12 digs. Stark had nine and Yacko had eight. At the net, Kuehn recorded five blocks to lead the way. Wickstrom chipped in with three and Durecki and Van Remortel finished with two.

  UP NEXT

The Wildcats will now prepare for the Conference Crossover next weekend, played on Friday and Saturday. Opponents for the weekend are still to be announced.
