Volleyball Heads to Indiana for UIndy Invitational

MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University Volleyball team heads to Indianapolis, Indiana for the University of Indianapolis Invitational this weekend. The Wildcats will take on Davenport University, Minnesota State University Moorhead, Saint Leo University and Gannon University in a busy weekend.

  LAST TIME OUT

NMU traveled to Houghton, Michigan this past weekend to take part in the Keweenaw Classic, hosted by Michigan Technological University. On Thursday night, the Wildcats started the season with a 3-2 victory over the University of Mary. On Friday the squad fell to Upper Iowa University and #9 Southwest Minnesota State University. Saturday saw NMU close out the weekend by winning the fourth and fifth sets to beat the University of Minnesota Crookston 3-2.

  ALL-TOURNAMENT TEAM

Sophomore Hailey Wickstrom (Calumet, Mich.) capped the week by being named to the Keweenaw Classic All-Tournament team. Wickstrom totaled 49 kills, hitting .283 across the team's four matches. She also added seven total blocks.

  LEADING THE ATTACK

Sophomore Lizzy Stark (Minneapolis, Minn.) paced the Wildcat attack with a total of 66 kills, averaging 3.67 kills per set. She also tied for the team's lead with eight aces and is second with 53 digs. At the net, she posted three blocks.

  GETTING DEFENSIVE

The Wildcats featured a balanced defense throughout the weekend. Sophomore Lauren Caprini (St. Charles, Ill.) paced the team with 59 kills, averaging 3.28 digs a set. Stark was right behind with her 53 digs while sophomore Alli Yacko (Oak Lawn, Ill.) added 48 digs.

At the net, senior Sarah Kuehn (Green Bay, Wis.) led the team with 15 blocks and is tied for third in the GLIAC. Freshman Abigail Durecki (South Lyon, Mich.) notched 10 blocks.

  SETTING IT UP

Freshman Lauren Van Remortel (Carmel, Ind.) finished the weekend with 135 assists. In Saturday's win over Crookston, she notched a career-high of 53 assists. Sophomore Abby Fortune (Appleton, Wis.) came in for the Upper Iowa match and tallied a career-high 35 assists.

  NMU VERSUS DAVENPORT

The Wildcats take on Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opponent Davenport University in the first match of the UIndy Invitational in nonconference action. NMU holds a 2-1 lead over the Panthers. DU enters the weekend at 1-3, defeating Clarion 3-0 in the season opener.

  NMU VERSUS MOORHEAD

NMU holds a 4-2 lead in the all-time series with Moorhead, with Friday's matchup the first one since the 2016 season. The Dragons come into the weekend 4-0 on the year, going undefeated at the Rebich Investments Tournament in Edinboro, Pennsylvania.

  NMU VERSUS SAINT LEO

This will be the first matchup between the two programs since the 2007 season. Saint Leo won the first-ever matchup that season 3-1. The Lions are 3-1 on the season, falling to Minnesota State University Mankato but defeating East Stroudsburg University, Saint Anselm University and American International University in the Barry University Classic.

  NMU VERSUS GANNON

The Wildcats face Gannon for the first time since 2007, and hold a 15-2 advantage all-time. The Knights are currently 2-2 this season, defeating New haven University and Ohio Dominican University but fell to McKendree University and #12 Ferris State University at the Ferris State Invitational.
