NMU To Compete In Midwest Region Crossover

MARQUETTE, Mich.  --  Northern Michigan University's volleyball team will travel to Aurora, Ill. this weekend to take on Rockhurst University, Walsh University, and McKendree University at the 10th annual Midwest Region Crossover.

The two-day tournament features 54 matches conducted on 11 courts throughout six sessions at one of the top volleyball facilities in the country. The event, designed to increase competition between teams from the three leagues in the NCAA Division II Midwest Region, has previously been held in Indianapolis, Indiana and Lansing, Michigan.

The regional volleyball event will feature 36 NCAA DII midwest region programs, including 15 from the Great Lakes Valley Conference, 12 from the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, and nine from the Great Midwest Athletic Conference.

On Friday, the GLIAC's #2 ranked Wildcats take on Rockhurst University at 12:30 p.m. (11:30 a.m. CT) and Walsh University at 6:30 p.m. (5:30 p.m. CT). On Saturday, the Wildcats take on McKendree University at 2 p.m. (1 p.m. CT). These games can be followed with live stats through the official Crossover website.

GLIAC Stat Leaders:

NMU leads the GLIAC in multiple statistical categories.  The Wildcats rank first with a 1.46 aces per set average, total blocks with 182, are averaging 2.88 blocks a set, have 47 solo blocks, and 269 block assists.  Their 1101.5 points also lead the league as does their 17.5 points a set.    

Wildcats in National Stat Rankings:

Several Wildcats are found in the NCAA stat rankings. Senior Kayla Chosa (Wrightstown, Wisc.) is ranked third in blocks per set, 1.40, and fifth in total blocks, 88.  Redshirt Sophomore Sarah Kuehn (Green Bay, Wisc./De Pere) is ranked 20th in both blocks per set, 1.24, and total blocks, 78.  Senior Jami Hogeboom (Grand Haven, Mich.) is ranked 23rd in assists per set with 11.1. NMU, as a team, is ranked second in blocks per set, 2.88, and third in overall team blocks, posting 182 on the season.

Aces Wild:

Junior Autumn Monsma (Grand Haven, Mich.) is ranked first in the GLIAC in aces per set. She has an average of 0.45 per set and is just 11 aces away from 100 career aces.

Antunes' Big Weekend:

Freshman Leticia Antunes (Florianopolis, Brazil/ Colegio Ofelia Fonseca) averaged a double-double over the weekend.  On Friday, she finished with a team-best 22 kills and tied for the team's lead with 20 digs against Tiffin University. On Saturday, she posted 12 kills and 18 digs to help the Wildcats defeat Ashland University.   

Chosa's milestone weekend:

Chosa is expected to reach several milestones this weekend.  With one more solo block she will become just the third player from NMU to achieve 100 in a career.  Once she is successful on two kills, she will also become the 17th player to reach 1,000 career kills.  For her career, she is third in NMU history in total blocks and solo blocks.  She is also fifth in career block assists with 302.  Chosa is currently ranked first in the GLIAC in blocks per set, averaging 1.40 per set. She is also ranked second in overall hitting percentage at .367 percent.  

Handing out assists:

Hogeboom is ranked third in the GLIAC for assists per set with an average of 11.13 per set. In her career, she has totaled 3,212 assists at NMU.

Whitehead Still Rising:

Whitehead has 302 total blocks, making her ranked eighth overall in NMU history. She is sixth in career block assists with 266.

Last time out:

The Wildcats spent a long time on the court this past weekend, taking both games into a fifth set.  NMU defeated Ashland 3-2 Saturday after falling to Tiffin University by the same 3-2 score Friday night. Antunes led in kills against Tiffin on Friday for the Wildcats.  Antunes, Whitehead, Kuehn, and Monsma each contributed 12 kills against Ashland Saturday.

NMU versus Rockhurst:

In their series with Rockhust, the two teams are even, as the series is tied 1-1.  Both teams also have a 3-1 win, which puts the sets won margin at 4-4.  The Wildcats last played Rockhurst in 2014, seeing Rockhurst capture a 3-1 victory.   In their first matchup in 2010, NMU claimed a 3-1 victory.   Both contests took place during the Midwest Region Crossover.   

NMU versus Walsh:

The Wildcats lead the series over Walsh with a record of 4-1. The teams last played in 2016 with NMU winning the last four matchups, all of which were 3-0 sweeps. The Wildcats hold 14-3 set advantage over Walsh as Walsh took victory in their first-ever contest, winning 3-2.   

NMU versus McKendree:

The Wildcats hold a 1-0 advantage over McKendree, winning last season's first-ever matchup 3-1.
