BAY CITY, Mich. -- Senior Madison Whitehead (Altoona, Wisc.) was named the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference North Player of the Weeek after earning All-Tournament Team status at the Keweenaw Classic this past weekend.
Whitehead earned the honors after leading the Wildcats with 43 kills and finished with 16 total blocks in four matches. She achieved double-digit kills each match, with a high of 12 against St. Cloud State College. Against Bemidji State University Sunday evening, Whitehead posted seven total blocks.
On the season, she has tallied 82 total kills with 28 blocks, and has moved up to 12th all-time for career kills at Northern Michigan University.
Joining Whitehead on the Keweenaw Classic All-Tournament Team was senior Kayla Chosa (Wrightstown, Mich.). Chosa finished the weekend with 35 total kills and a team-high 20 blocks, including five solo blocks. She achieved three solo blocks in the first match against University of Mary.
As a team, NMU finished the weekend at 3-1, improving to 6-2 on the season. The Wildcats defeated Mary, St. Cloud St. and Bemidji St. with three sweeps.
Northern Michigan opens up GLIAC play with their first home matches of the season this weekend. On Friday, the Wildcats host Saginaw Valley State University and follow it by hosting Lake Superior State University Saturday.
