Track & Field Hosts Northern Challenge Saturdaay

MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University Track & Field team hosts their only home meet of the season Saturday with the Northern Challenge. The field events begin at 12:30 with the running events slated to begin at 1:30 p.m.

  LAST TIME OUT

The Wildcats officially got the indoor season started in December by competing at The Opener, hosted by College of St. Scholastica. The Wildcats captured a total of five event wins, winning four individual races along with one relay.  

  SENIOR DAY

As part of Saturday meet, the team will honor their seniors. This year's squad features seven who will be competing in their final season with the Wildcats. The senior recognition is slated to begin at 1 p.m. and includes Megan Bauer (Anchorage, Alaska), Paige Du Bois (Green Bay, Wis.), Victoria Harris (Iron River, Mich.), Katelyn Smith (Gaylord, Mich.), Hanna Torvi (St. Paul, Minn.) Megan Martin (Hillsdale, Mich.) and Sydney McPeters (Sugarland, Texas).  

  WINS IN THE OPENER

Junior Izabelle Peterson (Marquette, Mich.) captured first place in the 60m Dash as she crossed in 7.86 seconds. Sophomore Ninti Little (Lakewood, Wash.) was third and junior Lauren Alarie (Highland, Mich.) was fourth.

In the 600m run, NMU placed seven among the top eight finishers. Du Bois paced the team with a first place time of 1:38.83 with Martin and sophomore Hannah Jones (Williamston, Mich.) close behind.

Freshman Caroline Vegeberg (Fejo, Denmark) made her indoor debut for the Wildcats by winning the mile, posting a winning time of 5:20.0

The distance race of the 3K saw NMU capture the top four places with sophomore Anna Kelley (Minneapolis, Minn.) led the way with a time of 10:53.48. Torvi was just 0.32 seconds behind for second place and freshman Meghan Langworthy (Big Rapids, Mich.) was third. Sophomore Katrina Salmen (Peshtigo, Wis.) was fourth.

  A RELAY WIN

The women saw their A relay take the top spot in the 4x400m relay as sophomore Claire Donner (Sierra Vista, Ariz.), Martin, Jones and Du Bois teamed to go 4:12.74 for the top spot.

  THE MEET

The meet will feature the full NMU squad as well as other teams from the U.P. In total, 21 events will be conducted. This year, members of the NMU Men's Soccer team with be running in some of the races as well.
