Wildcats Collect 10 Victories at Northern Challenge

MARQUETTE, Mich.—Northern Michigan University Women's Track & Field collected victories in 10 events as they hosted the Northern Challenge, their lone home meet of the season.


A pair of seniors dominated in the 300-meter dash with Shayla Huebner (Marquette, Michigan) being the first to cross the finish line. Her time of 40.86 seconds puts her atop the NMU record book for the event. Not far behind, Paige Dutcher (Williamston, Michigan) finished in 41.80 seconds giving her the second-fastest time in Wildcat history.


Senior Michelle Juergen (Gau-Odernheim, Germany) was the top finisher in a pair of events including the high jump and long jump. She defeated the field in the high jump when she cleared 5 feet, 6.00 inches which matched her season-best and NCAA II provisional mark. Sophomore Nina Augsten (Koenigsbronn, Germany) finished second while freshman Kelsie Sibbald (Barbeau, Michigan) was third.

In the long jump, Juergen captured the victory when she cleared 17'06.25". Augsten was again the runner-up in the long jump and freshman Ninti Little (Lakewood, Washington) was third.


In the 600-meter dash, junior Paige Du Bois (Green Bay, Wisconsin) also shot up the NMU record book with her time of 1:38.83. The mark was the fastest in the field and now puts her at second-fastest in the Wildcat record book. Junior Megan Martin (Hillsdale, Michigan) finished the 600-meters in second while freshman Sydney Ormsbee (Brighton, Michigan) was third.


Already with the second-fastest time in program history, sophomore Izabelle Peterson (Marquette, Michigan) improved her career-best in the 200-meter dash with a mark of 25.65 seconds. The Wildcats swept the top-five in the event with Dutcher and junior Sydney McPeters (Sugarland, Texas) finishing second and third. 


NMU took the top spot in both the 55-meter sprint and the 55-meter hurdles. Leading a sweep of the top-three in the 55-meters was Peterson. She crossed the finish line in 7.20 seconds followed by sophomore Lauren Alarie (Highland, Michigan) and senior Jenna Long (Suamico, Wisconsin) in second and third. Augstun took the crown in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 8.67 seconds.


It was the weight throw that got the day started which saw freshmen Alyssa Rivest (Watertown, Wisconsin) collect the victory. Her toss of 36'07.00" puts her at eighth in the Wildcat record book. Freshman Madi Spychalla (Milwaukee, Wisconsin) was runner-up in the weight throw while sophomore Megan Evilsizer (Clinton Township, Michigan) was third. For Spychalla, she now has the 10th-best mark in program history with her toss of 35'09.25".


In the mile, a pair of Wildcats finished in the top-five lead by freshman Anna Kelley (Minneapolis, Minnesota) who captured the win. She finished with a time of 5:27.28 to defeat the field while freshman Katrina Salmen (Peshtigo, Wisconsin) finished fourth in the event.


The final victory for the Wildcats came in the 4x400-meter relay. The team of Martin, freshman Hannah Jones (Williamston, Michigan), Ormsbee, and senior Hannah Lonergan (Novi, Michigan) finished with a time of 4:17.21.

NMU will hit the road next weekend when they travel to Saginaw Valley State University for the Jet's Pizza Invitational Friday and Saturday.
