Wildcats Compete At Doug Hansen

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. -- The Northern Michigan University track & field team returned to action Friday at the Doug Hansen Open hosted by Saginaw Valley State.

"This meet was a good chance for the team to compete after winter break," said NMU head coach Jenny Ryan. "It gave us the opportunity to see where we are currently at and what we need to work on for the GLIAC Championships at the end of February. We had some good early season performances from the athletes."

NMU sophomore Samanthia Johnson won the women's weight throw with a throw of 15.59m which was .63 farther than the second-place finisher.

The Wildcats also took three of the top four spots in the women's 3,000 meter run. Freshman Kameron Burmeister led the way for NMU with a 10:28.63 which set a SVSU Fieldhouse record. Senior Larissa Halonen placed second for the Wildcats with a time of 10:43.63 before senior Olivia Howard finished fourth overall clocking a 10:48.55. Halonen also took sixth in the mile clocking a 5:16.43.

Senior Brittni Wirtz finished fourth in the 60 meter dash with a time of 7.79., improving on her qualifying time of 7.87.

Senior Jasmine King took fifth in the 60 meter hurdles with a time of 9.29.

The host the Northern Challenge on Jan. 31 at the Superior Dome. Events begin at 12:30 p.m.
