NMU Sets Two School Records At St. Scholastica Opener

DULUTH, Minn. -- Two Northern Michigan University school records were broken as the Wildcats track and field team opened their indoor season at The Opener hosted by the College of St. Scholastica Saturday.

In the competition, NMU captured four first-place finishes.

Junior Danielle Brzezinski set an NMU school record in the women's 300 meter dash posting a time of 42.74, good for third in the event while sophomore Jasmine Williams set a Wildcats record in the indoor shot put winning the event with a throw of 41-02.25.

"This was a great start to our indoor season," said assistant coach Alex Carradine. "The team has been training hard all semester and that showed today with the school records set.The returners are competing at a higher level now than they were this time last year. The team looks poised to build upon the success of last season and compete well in the conference."

Williams also finished third in the women's weight throw with a throw of 50-01.25.

Freshman Clara Churchill was second in the 600 meter run with a time of 1:43.03. Senior Brittni Wirtz and sophomore Avadon James placed first and second, respectively in the 60 meter dash prelims. Wirtz won the final race with a time of 7.77 while James was third with a time of 7.97.

James also placed second overall but was the top collegiate finisher in the women's 200 meter dash with a time of 26.58. Wittz was fourth overall and the second collegian with a time of 26.81 and Brzezinski was fifth overall and third among collegiate competitors with a time of 26.84.

Senior Jasmine King won the women's 60-meter hurtles with a time of 9.25 while junior Kery Nathan was third with a time of 9.73.

NMU's 4 x 200 meter relay team consisting of James, King, Brzeinski and Wirtz picked up a win in the event posting a time of 1:46.78 in the event.

Nathan finished second in the high jump with a jump of 4-09.75 before King placed second in the long jump (16-10.50) and triple jump (34-11.75).

The Wildcats return to action on January 23 at the Doug Hansen meet hosted by Saginaw Valley State.
