MARQUETTE, Mich. – The Northern Michigan University track & field team will compete at the Al Owens Classic April 19-20 at Grand Valley State University which will serve as the final tuneup for the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletics Conference Outdoor Championships.
NMU is coming off finishing third out of six teams at the Hillsdale Invitational last weekend (April 12).
Wildcat freshman Samanthia Johnson broke the NMU school record and provisionally qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championships with a winning mark of 143-02, which was a personal best while freshman Jasmine Williams placed third in the event with a distance of 142-01.
NMU senior Cheyenne Stewart captured first in the long jump and the triple jump. Stewart posed a personal best in the long jump with a distance of 18-4.50 and posted a jump of 39-7.75 in the triple jump.
Sophomore Avadon James finished second in the 100-meter dash posting a time of 12.17 in the finals of the event. Junior Brittni Wirtz was fifth in the event at 12.20. James also posted a third place finish in the 200-meter dash with a time of 27.19 while Wirtz was seventh at 27.50.
The GLIAC Outdoor Championships will be held April 30 – May 2 at the Spire Institute in Geneva, Ohio, hosted by Lake Erie College.
