NMU Finishes Third At Hillsdale Invitational

HILLSDALE, Mich. – Northern Michigan University freshman Samanthia Johnson broke the NMU school record in the discus throw as the Wildcat track and field team competed at the Hillsdale Invitational Saturday, winning the event and provisionally qualifying for the NCAA Outdoor meet.  NMU finished third out of six teams in the meet with 96 points.

Johnson won the event with a distance of 143-02, which was a personal best. Fellow NMU freshman Jasmine Williams placed third in the event with a distance of 142-01.

NMU senior Cheyenne Stewart captured first in the long jump and the triple jump. Stewart posed a personal best in the long jump with a distance of 18-4.50 and posted a jump of 39-7.75 in the triple jump.

Junior Olivia Howard won the 5,000 meter run posting a time of 18:29.31 while senior Chelsea Farquhar clocked a 19:18.94 finishing third in the event.

Sophomore Avadon James finished second in the 100-meter dash posting a time of 12.17 in the finals of the event. Junior Brittni Wirtz was fifth in the event at 12.20.  James also posted a third place finish in the 200-meter dash with a time of 27.19 while Wirtz was seventh at 27.50.

Sophomore Jaylee Brown posted a personal best in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:22.22 finishing sixth in the event.

Junior Christina Toogood finished second in the 1,500 meter run with a time of 4:36.70 while junior Larissa Halonen was fourth in the event with a personal best 4:44.33. Junior Catherine Swiderski was 10th in the 1,500 also posting a personal best of 5:04.45

Freshman Shannon Flynn posted a personal best of 12:49.98 in the 3,000 meter steeplechase while Junior Abbey Roche finished third in the event with a time of 13:03.13.

The Wildcats return to action at the Al Owens Classic on April 19 in Allendale, Mich.
