Wildcats Fall to Duluth, 2-0, in Non-conference Matchup

MARQUETTE, MICH.—Northern Michigan University Women's Soccer (1-1-0, 0-0-0 GLIAC) dropped Sunday's afternoon match, 2-0, to the University of Minnesota Duluth (1-1-0, 0-0-0 NSIC) Sunday afternoon at the NMU Soccer Field.

    SCORELESS FIRST HALF

NMU jumped out early on the offensive end, controlling the ball much of the opening half. The Wildcats outshot their opponents, 6-4, in the first half with three chances coming on-goal. Freshman forward Taelor Moore (Warren, Michigan) attempted three shots, putting a pair on-target. Senior midfielder Aimee Colla (Muskego, Wisconsin) also had a shot on-goal.

Midway through the half, Duluth began to pick up the tempo attempting their first shot near the 28-minute mark. The Bulldogs did attempt three more shots before both teams went into the half locked in a scoreless tie.

    DULUTH TAKES THE LEAD

Despite the Wildcats getting out to the quick start in the first half, it was Duluth that took over offensively in the second. UMD outshot NMU, 11-5, in the half to take a 15-11 advance for the contest.

After a number of offensive chances, the Bulldogs took the lead in the 65th minute after a corner kick bounced around in front of the net before finally being scored by a Duluth attacker. Another corner kick with less than a minute to play gave UMD their second goal of the match to hand the Wildcats a 2-0 defeat.

   NMU STAT LEADERS

For the second-consecutive match, Moore lead the Wildcats in shots with four, two of which were on-goal. Colla and freshman forward Rachael Erste (Rockford, Michigan) also attempted a shot on goal.

In goal, sophomore goalkeeper Brianna Frontuto (Luxemburg, Wisconsin) made her second start of the year falling to 1-1-0. Her three saves brought her season total  to 11, currently the most in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference after the Wildcats first weekend of action.

    WILDCATS HIT THE ROAD

Next up for the Wildcats will be their first road contest of the season when they take on the University of Southern Indiana in a neutral site contest located in Hammond, Indiana on the campus of Purdue University-Northwest. Game time is scheduled for 6 p.m. (EDT).

It will be the first matchup between the two programs since 2003 with NMU owning a 2-0-0 overall record in the series.
