Women's Basketball Begins Season This Weekend

MARQUETTE, Mich. –  Northern Michigan University Women's Basketball tips off their season this weekend at Lewis University to take on William Jewell College Saturday and Lewis University Sunday for the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference/Great Lakes Valley Conference Challenge.

  PRESEASON RECOGNITION

Senior Jessica Schultz (Mineral Point, Wis.) and junior Lexi Smith (St. Germain, Wis.) were named to the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference North Division Preseason All-GLIAC team.

Schultz was named Second Team All-GLIAC and to the All-GLIAC Defensive Team last season as she averaged 9.6 points and 1.2 blocks per game. She reached double figures 15 times throughout the season.

Smith comes back to the team after earning First Team All-GLIAC status last season as she averaged 10.3 points per game and earned two GLIAC Player of the Week honors. She was named the league's Freshman of the Year her freshman season.

  FAMILIAR FACES

In addition to Schultz and Smith, the Wildcats return three other players who saw multiple starts last season plus others who saw significant playing time. Sophomore Emily Mueller (Fond du Lac, Wis.) made 13 starts in her rookie season while senior Erin Honkala (Howell, Mich.) made 10 starts. At the end of the season, Amber Huebner (Marquette, Mich.) started the final five games.

Junior Elizabeth Lutz (Marshall, Wis.) averaged 21 minutes per game off the bench while senior Baleigh Delorit (Algoma, Wis.) added 10 minutes of action per game. The two come into this season as two of the top three-point threats returning from last year.

  NEW THIS YEAR

NMU will also lean on several newcomers to make an impact this season. Sophomore transfer Elena Alaix (Madrid, Spain) and freshman Gwen Streblow (Plymouth, Wis.), Avery Ledy (Marquette, Mich.)Samantha Potter (Royal Oak, Mich.), Makaylee Kuhn (Hilbert, Wis.), Emily Coveyou (St. Ignace, Mich.) and Esther Byington (Grand Haven, Mich.)These strong new players will all look to contribute to the team.

Redshirt freshman Andrea Perez (Madrid, Spain) joined the team in the middle of last season but did not see any time due recovering from an injury.

 SEASON OUTLOOK

Last season, the Wildcats finished 23-10 and reached the GLIAC Championships and the NCAA Midwest Regional Semifinals. This season, NMU was predicted to finished second in the North Division of the GLIAC and third overall in the league.

  NMU VERSUS WILLIAM JEWELL

This is the first time in program history that the team will take on William Jewell. The Cardinals ended last season with a 14-13 record.

  NMU VERSUS LEWIS

Last year, NMU faced Lewis twice and split their meetings as they defeated the Flyers in the season opener last year, 62-56, but then dropped a match in the Berry Events Center 58-50 in December. The all-time series is now tied at 7-7. Lewis finished last season at 27-5 before falling to Grand Valley State University in the NCAA Midwest Regional Semifinals.
