Wildcats Claim Victory in Defensive Battle

WESTVILLE, Ind. – The Northern Michigan University Women's Basketball team captured their 10th Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletics Conference victory of the season with a 44-40 victory over Purdue University Northwest Saturday afternoon.

  STAT LEADERS

The Wildcats were led by junior Jessica Schultz (Mineral Point, Wis.) with 13 points and nine rebounds. She also notched three blocked shots.  Sophomore Elizabeth Lutz (Marshall, Wis.) added nine points while senior Darby Youngstrom (Cook, Minn.) and sophomore Lexi Smith (St. Germain, Wis.) both tallied eight points.

Youngstrom also added a team best 10 rebounds, tied with junior Erin Honkala (Howell, Mich.).  Youngstrom also tied Lutz with two steals.

  GETTING STARTED

PNW jumped out to a 10-2 lead, with senior Taylor Hodell (Wausau, Wis.) scoring two free throws for the Wildcats. Hodell then added another free throw with 4:26 to play. Schultz added a layup for NMU a minute later. Schultz later added a free throw and a jumper. Lutz chipped in with a free throw with 1:16 on the clock but the Pride had managed to take a 19-9 lead at the end of the first quarter.

  COMING BACK

Lutz opened the second quarter with a three, followed by a layup from Schultz and jumper from Smith to make it 19-16 with 7:29 to go in the half. Youngstrom then added two free throws to cut the deficit to just 19-18 a minute later.

With 4:53 to play in the first half, Lutz gave NMU their first lead of the game with a three. Hodell added a free throw and made the score 22-19 with 4:06 on the clock. The Pride answered with two free throws and a layup to reclaim a 23-22 lead with 2:43 to go. PNW was able to score two more free throws but Smith hit a jumper and then added a free throw in the final minute to tie the game at 25-25 heading into half time.

 TAKING A LEAD

In the third quarter, PNW scored first with a layup. Youngstrom responded with a jumper and Schultz followed with a three-pointer and Lutz made a jumper to give NMU a 32-27 lead four minutes into the new half.

The Pride answered with a three, but Smith and Hodell responded with a layup each. Smith then added a free throw and gave the Wildcats a 37-30 lead heading into the final quarter.

 HOLDING ON

Youngstrom moved NMU up to a 39-30 lead to start the fourth quarter. The Pride answered and pulled within 39-37 with 4:14 to go. With nine seconds left, Schultz made a layup and a free throw to make it 42-37. The Pride hit a three seconds later, but Youngstrom hit two free throws in the final seconds to win 44-40.

The Wildcats improve to 15-6 on the season and captured their 10th victory of the GLIAC season and are now 10-3 in the GLIAC. NMU will return to action Thursday to take on Saginaw Valley State University Thursday, hosted by Jill Leonard State Farm and will host Senior Day on Saturday. Saturday's game is hosted by First Bank.
