Women’s Basketball Tops Lions in Exhibition Opener

MARQUETTE, Mich. – Northern Michigan University Women's Basketball opened the 2018-19 season with a 79-38 victory over Finlandia University in an exhibition game.

  STAT LEADERS

The Wildcats were led by junior Baleigh Delorit (Algoma, Wis.) who posted 17 points on 5-7 shooting from the field and 4-6 from behind the three-point line. She also added three free throws.  Freshman Emily Mueller (Fond du Lac, Wis.) added 11 points in her NMU debut with sophomore Danielle Hartjes (Kaukauna, Wis.) chipping in with 10.

Senior Tess Weatherly (Howell, Mich.) aided the effort with nine points while freshman Madigan Johns (Ishpeming, Mich.) and junior CeCe Rapp (St. Charles, Ill.) both notched eight.

The Wildcats controlled the glass, grabbing 21 offensive rebounds and out rebounded the Lions 49-23.  Hartjes tallied six offensive rebounds while Rapp had four as the pair tied for a team-best nine total rebounds. Mueller finished with six boards. 

Johns led the team with four assists and Weatherly and sophomore Amber Huebner (Marquette, Mich.) both had three.

Defensively, Weatherly and junior Erin Honkala (Howell, Mich.) both had three steals and Delorit had two. Rapp ended the contest with two blocked shots.

  THE FIRST QUARTER

Finlandia scored the first basket of the game, but NMU answered with an 11-0 run. Mueller hit the first NMU basket then Delorit made her first three of the game.  Sophomore Elizabeth Lutz (Marshall, Wis.) sank two free throws followed by a jumper. Honkala added a fast break basket before the Lions were able to stop the rally, making the score 11-4 with 5:53 to go in the quarter.

After another FU basket and free throw, Weatherly finished the quarter with a three to make it 14-7 at the end of the first quarter.

 PULLING AWAY

NMU outscored the Lions 27-2 in the second quarter to take control of the game.  Lutz scored the first Wildcat basket followed by a Delorit jumper and Weatherly three-pointer to make it 21-7 less than two minutes in. Rapp sack two free throws and Delorit followed with two of her own to move the score 25-7.

On the next two possessions, Hartjes sank two baskets and made the score 29-7 with 4:39 left in the first half. 

Huebner added to the lead with a basket inside the paint and Hartjes added another free throw before FU scored their first basket in the quarter at the 2:36 mark, making the score 32-9.

Hartjes, Honkala, Huebner and Johns each scored, with Johns hitting a three-pointer to make the score 41-9 at the half.  

 FINISH THE GAME

NMU continued their success into the second half, and pushed the lead to 37 points with Honkala making a jumper, Mueller added five points and Rapp had two, making the score 50-11 after an FU score.  The Lions were able to cut the lead down to 56-21 with 3:22 but NMU responded and pushed the lead back to 63-24 to end the quarter.

In the fourth quarter, the Wildcats continued to cruise and eventually took a 79-38 victory over the Division III squad.

The Wildcats return for a scrimmage against Lake Superior State University Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. inside the Berry Events Center. The regular season will tip off on Saturday, November 10 at Hillsdale College with NMU taking on Lewis University.
